Non-neuronal cells make up to 50% of the cells within the CNS. With technological advancement, it has become clear that those glial cells are not just bystanders but are actively involved in CNS activity, which “moves glia to the forefront” (as one of the leading neuroscience journals writes). To bring Austria on the glia map, we, Drs. Vered Kellner (MedUni Vienna), Kerstin Lenk (TU Graz), and Sandra Siegert (ISTA) founded ATgliaNet in 2023. ATgliaNet is integrated into the EU-glia community network and organizes monthly webinars and social events for glia enthusiasts in Austria.
To further strengthen the scientific connection within the ATgliaNet community, we are organizing the “ATgliaNet Symposium 2025”, a one-day event at ISTA. Our goals are to establish a platform for leading glial labs to share recent advancements and ideas, opportunities to discuss collaborations, and offer students the possibility to get insights into the open questions within the community.
